Ford AU (Late Series 1), Series II and III, Smartsheild / Body Electronics Module Information

This document gives a quick rundown on the Ford's Smartsheild and Body Electronics Module (Hereafter called BEM), the features each model BEM has, how to add and Remove Remote Keyfobs and ignition keys from the Smartsheild Memory, and finally wiring information for the Smartsheild/BEM Modules.
The Smartsheild Security system fitted to the Late AU Series I Falcons through to the AU III Falcons, consists of two distinct parts. These parts include the Remote central Locking part, which consists of the SmartSheild Remote Keyfobs, and the smartsheild module itself.
The other part of the Smartsheild security system is the Ignition Cut-out, and Starter disable function, which is totally integrated with the EEC-V Engine Management systems.
It is because of this total integration with the Engine Management, that the Smartsheild system makes certain types of theft (Joyriding, Driving the Vehicle), very difficult for non-professional thieves. The Smartsheild system CANNOT be Hotwired, (I.E. Bypassed by shorting, or disconnecting wiring), nor can it be simply removed.
As mentioned above, these parts are electronically totally separate to one another. This means that the ignition cut-out will work automatically, regardless of the Keyfob operation. Also, remote central locking will also work, even if Smartsheild has disabled the vehicle.
Both these Smartsheild sections have their own separate power supplies, and consequently, their own separate fuses.
Although these parts are electrically separate beasts, they physically reside in the same module.
On the AU Model Falcons, this module was physically housed in what is called the BEM, or the Body Electronics Module.
The Body Electronics Module is responsible for most of the mundane electrical features on the Ford Falcon series of Vehicles, from features such as interior light delay, through to Variable Instrument Illumination, Power Antenna height, Variable wiper speed, and rear window demister timer.
With the AU Model Falcons, there are two distinct models of BEM fitted to various vehicles (Low and High Series), with a third model BEM being very similar to the High Series model, with the exception of the removal of certain features.
Body Electronic Modules for the AU (Smartshield models)
As mentioned above, there are two distinct types of BEMs made available on the AU series Falcon, with a third Mid Series Model using the same board as the High series, with removed features.
These are classified by Ford as being
  • Low Series - Fitted to Forte, Models
  • Mid Series - Fitted to Taxi Pack, Police Pack, XR6, XR8 and Futura (AU) Models
  • High Series - Fitted to Fairmont, Fairmont Ghia, Fairlane, LTD, and Tickford T Series.

    Low Series Features
  • Manual control of illuminated entry and exit delay
  • Manual boot release with security time out and speed dependant disable
  • Remote central locking with hazard acknowledgment
  • Manual central locking
  • Remote drivers door lock /unlock
  • Panic alarm
  • Key in lock warning horn/hazard

  • Diagnostic capability of inputs, outputs and trouble codes

  • Power window supply control with key off

    Mid Series Features
    The Mid series Body Electronics Module is based on the High Series BEM, with certain features removed.
    The MID series BEM has all the features of the Low Series BEM, but in addition includes,
  • Front intermittent wiper dwell timer with variable dwell and speed dependency
  • Power antenna control
  • Headlamp warning chime, headlamps on, ignition off.

    High Series Features
    The High series Body Electronics Module had all the features of the Low and Mid series, and additional features such as,
  • Front intermittent wiper dwell timer with variable dwell and speed dependency
  • Front washer motor control
  • Instrument cluster illumination (LCD & Graphics) control
  • Power antenna control
  • Automatic headlamp switch off action with manual override
  • Headlamp warning chime, headlamps on, ignition off.

    The Following is a description of these features, and brief information on how the BEM interacts with the vehicle.

    FRONT INTERMITTENT WIPER WITH FIXED DWELL (LOW SERIES)
    The BEM controls the operation of the Intermittent wiper delay by pulsing the wiper relay for a period of 0.8 Seconds, every 7 seconds, thereby operating the Wipers once every seven seconds.

    REMOTE CENTRAL LOCKING WITH HAZARD ACKNOWLEDGEMENT (All Series)
    When the Central door lock switch is activated on the Remote Key fob (Grey Button), the door locks, (including the tailgate on Wagons) will change state (Lock/Unlock).
    This is achieved by pulsing the relevant Central locking relay inside the BEM for a period of 0.8 Seconds.

    CLUSTER INDEPENDANT ILLUMINATION (High Series)
    When the ignition is turned On, the BEM turns On the LCD illumination. Brightness is controlled by the Dim/Bright control on the Headlights switch.
    When the Park Lamps are turned on, the BEM dims the LCD illumination, and turns on the graphics illumination. The Brightness on the entire cluster is controlled by the dim/bright control on the headlight switch, but this setting is independent to that set for daylight LCD Illumination.

    DOME LAMP ILLUMINATED ENTRY DELAY (All Series)
    Unlocking the car doors with the remote key fob, will turn on the Interior Dome lamp. The Dome lamp will stay on for a period of 20 seconds, or Until the Ignition Switch is switched to ACC, or ON. After which, the Dome lamp will fade out for a period of 6.4 Seconds

    DOME LAMP ILLUMINATED EXIT DELAY (All Series)
    Opening an already locked door will turn on the dome lamp; when the door is closed, the dome lamp will stay on for 20 seconds, then fade out for a period of 6.4 Seconds
    If the Remote Keypad is used to lock the doors, before the 20 seconds is over (I.E. dome lamp is still on), the BEM will turn the dome lamp off.
    If a door is left open for a period longer than 30 Minutes, the BEM Will switch off the Dome lamp to protect the Battery.

    HEATED BACKLIGHT - REAR WINDOW DEMISTER (All Series)
    The operation of the heated backlight is controlled by the BEM.
    When the switch is operated, the heated backlight will stay on for a period of 15 minutes.
    The heated backlight operates in both the Accessories, and On ignition positions.
    If the Heated backlight is turned On before the engine is started, the Backlight will be turned Off while the engine is cranking, and the 15 minute counter is put on hold.
    When the key is returned to On, the backlight is automatically turned On again, and the counter resumes.
    With the heated backlight on, a further operation of the switch will turn it off.

    POWER WINDOW OPERATION WITH KEY OFF (All Series)
    When the ignition is in the accessory or On positions, the power window relay is energised.
    With the key in the Off position, the power window relay will stay on for a period of 1 hour, unless a door is opened.
    After a door is opened, the relay will stay energised for a period of 40 seconds.

    INTERMITTENT WIPE VARIABLE AND SPEED DEPENDANCY (Mid/High Series)
    The wipers will wipe at a rate set by the rotating control on the wiper stalk switch. The rate is from 4 to 14 seconds.
    At speeds above 8km/h the dwell time is reduced in defined increments which are determined by the 5-detent settings of the variable speed potentiometer. The timer is incremented for each road speed change of 8km/h.

    WINDSCREEN WASH (All Series)
    If the windscreen was switch is momentary operated, the washer pump will operate for a period of 1.3 seconds. (If you don't believe me, I suggest you go out there, and time it yourself !)
    If the switch is held for longer than 1.6 seconds, the pump will stop as soon as the switch is released.
    Dunno about you, but this feature was the main reason why I got myself a Falcon !

    WIPER CONTROL AFTER WASH (All Series)
    When the washer pump is operated, the wipers will start operating approximately 0.5 seconds after the pump starts.
    When the pump switch is released, the BEM will operate the wipers for another 3 wipes.
    The BEM monitors the wiper operation by counting 2 end of wipe park pulses, and then turning the wiper relay off.
    If the BEM does not see a park pulse for more than 5 seconds, it will turn off the wiper relay to protect the wiper motor.

    MANUAL BOOT RELEASE WITH SECURITY TIMEOUT AND SPEED DEPENDANT DISABLE (All Series)
    With the ignition switch in the accessory position, manual boot release may be operated. A pulse 0.8 seconds long activates the solenoid to unlock the boot lid.
    This function is also available with the ignition switch in the run position for vehicle speeds below 8km/h.
    If the vehicle has exceeded 8km/h the boot cannot be released until the vehicle has completely stopped.
    Manual release can be operated after the ignition has been turned off for a period of 10 minutes. The dome lamp is manually controlled from the combination headlamp switch.

    LIGHTS ON CHIME (All Series)
    A lights on chime is activated if the headlight or park lights are on after the ignition has been switched from run to the off position, this only occurs if in manual override mode.
    The chime will sound for 25 seconds. If the ignition switch is in the accessories position and the lights are left on the chime will be continuous. If the ignition switch is in the off position and the park lamps are switched on then off the chime will sound for 25 seconds then turn off.

    AUTOMATIC HEADLIGHT DELAY (High series)
    With the auto delay turned on from the headlamp switch, the headlamp relay will activate for 80 to 90 seconds after the headlamps and ignition are turned off.
    When in manual mode the lights on chime will sound for 25 seconds, if the headlamps are left on in manual mode and the ignition key is in the accessories or off position.
    If a malfunction should occur to the onboard relay, the driver transistor or the headlamp switch an error code will be logged in memory.
    Switching the ignition switch from accessories to ignition on will activate the lights on chime and warning lamp for 3.0 seconds and the hazards will be on for 3.0 seconds then turn off.
    If the ignition switch is turned from accessories to off, the lights on chime and warning will operate for 25 seconds and the hazards will flash at 2.5Hz for 25 seconds then turn off.

    BATTERY SAVER FOR DOME, BOOT & GLOVE BOX LAMPS (All Series)
    The BEM has an internal timer which will turn off the supply to the lamps after 30 minutes with the ignition off, should the doors, boot or glove box be left open, or the map lamps left on. This is to conserve battery power.
    The timer is reset if the door switch is opened (door closed) or any button on the remote key is operated. If a short circuit is detected, the battery saver will disable the supply.
    It will be reset if the ignition switch, door switch or remote key changes state. (Off to on) (Lock to unlock or unlock to lock) The time out only occurs if the ignition switch is off.

    ELECTRONIC IMMOBILISATION SYSTEM - SMARTSHEILD (All Series)
    The immobilised state is indicated by the Smartsheild warning jewel (LED) as a rapid flash rate.
    The vehicles ignition key is a transponder, much like a proximity card/transponder on an access control system for premises.
    What this means in laymen’s terms is that when the ignition key is placed inside the ignition barrel, and is switched to the ON position, the ignition barrel will detect the keys unique code, using RF frequency, to induce a voltage within the implanted chip inside the ignition key, which will then send a code to the ignition barrel.
    This code, along with 3 Unique codes from the ignition key switch, (Using a challenge/response technique), is then sent to the Smartsheild BEM, via the ignition lock assembly.
    At this time the EEC-V module has received a request to start the motor.
    It will do this, without any information from the BEM module, but will shut down the motor if it hasn’t received any valid information after a period of 1.5 seconds.
    If everything is OK with the ignition key, and ignition lock assembly, the EEC-V module will request the BEMs (Smartsheilds) unique ID
    This request will also include the EEC-V's unique code.
    The BEM will then check the EEC-V's unique code, to see if it is recognised, and if so, it will send its unique code to the EEC-V module.
    If everything is fine, then the engine will run.... If not, then the Smartsheild LED will flash, indicating an error

    If there is an error with the immobilisation system (I.E. wrong key used), the engine will only be allowed to start 3 times, before it is completely immobilised.
    NOTE : Started doesn’t actually mean running, the engine will stall after 1.5 seconds without the correct Smartsheild procedure.

    Note : The remote keypads will still operate on an immobilised car, however an immobilised car will not display the immobilised flash with the ignition off, and will display the armed code as normal.
    If the cause is an unauthorised attempt to start the car, i.e. by hot wiring, the car will remain un-startable. If the vehicle is completely Immobilised, you will require a Ford NGS Tester to get things running again (NOT CHEAP)

    KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEM (All Series)
    The keyless entry system allows remote unlocking of the doors.
    A small radio transmitter with a unique code is used to communicate with the BEM.
    The SMARTSHEILD module can be programmed to recognise up to 4 keypads.

    DIAGNOSTIC CAPABILITY (All Series)
    The BEM can perform a self check, to verify the correct functioning of the SMARTSHEILD system.
    The self check is done each time the ignition is turned to the Off position.
    The next time the ignition is turned On, the results from the previous self test are displayed on the flashing SMARTSHEILD warning Jewel (LED) in the instrument cluster.

    ELECTRONIC IGNITION LOCK ASSEMBLY
    The electronic ignition lock assembly contains a lock barrel, a shear shaft, an ignition switch with a vane, and an electronic circuit board.
    The circuit board contains an RF Voltage inducer, and Receiver which is used to power and communicate with the Smartsheild Ignition key transponder.
    NOTE : The transponder IS NOT the remote smartsheild keyfob. The transponder is embedded within the Ignition key.

    SMARTSHEILD REMOTE KEYPADS/KEYFOBS
    The keypad is a small radio transmitter that transmits to the BEM a unique rolling code (for security) and a code to either lock/unlock the doors (and Tailgate for wagon), to operate the Boot release, and to operate the Panic feature
    Up to four keypads can be programmed on a single BEM.
    The transmitter operates at 303.8Mhz, and uses a 12V dry Cell Battery that lasts approximately 1 year.
    The transmitter has a range of about 10 Meters.
    When the Transmitter is used, the BEM operates the Hazard Warning Lamps to indicate a successful operation. The BEM also turns on the interior lamps when the doors are unlocked.

  • Adding and Removing remote Keypads to the Smartsheild module
    Up to four Keypads can be programed and used with the Smartsheild Remote Central locking system.
    If you have replaced the BEM, or new keypads are being added to the system, you will need to train the keypad codes to the module.
  • 1. The ignition switch should be in the Off position, with all the doors shut and Unlocked.
  • 2. Turn the ignition key to the ACCESSORY position and within 5 seconds, operates the rear demister switch exactly three times in quick succession. (IE. Press the switch so the Demister light turns on, then off, then back on again.)
  • 3. After the 5 seconds is up, the door locks will change state, to indicate that the BEM has entered keypad learn mode.
    NOTE : All existing keypads at this point, have been erased from memory !
  • 4. Press either buttons on the keypad that is to be trained. The door locks will change state twice, to indicate that the keypad has been added to the BEM memory.
  • 5. Follow step 4. for each keypad that is to be added to the BEM memory. A maximum of 4 keypads can be added to the BEM memory. NOTE : You must teach all remote keypads for the Smartsheild module, before proceeding.
  • 6. When you have taught all the remote keypads, turn the ignition to the Off position to leave the learn mode. The door locks will change state to indicate a return to normal mode.
  • 7. Check the function of all buttons on each keypad, to ensure that the keypad has been trained.
  • Smartsheild Operation
    The immobilised state is indicated by the Smartsheild warning jewel (LED) as a rapid flash rate.
    Smartsheild is almost a totally different Beast to the Smartlock method of immobilisation. (If you thought Smartlock was psychotic, you have not seen anything yet!)
    Smartsheild differs from Smartlock in the following ways,
  • 1) The vehicles ignition key now has a transponder, much like a proximity card/transponder on an access control system for premises.

  • Adding and Removing Ignition Keys to a Smartsheild Falcon
    The following method is to be used if you are adding a new Transponder (Ignition Key)for use on the vehicle.
    NOTE : You will require at LEAST 2 Keys that are known to the Smartsheild system in order for this operation to work !
  • 1. Enter the vehicle, sit in the drivers seat, and close the door. Turn all accessories off.
  • 2. Insert a known (learnt key) in to the Ignition switch, and Turn the ignition to the Accessories position.
  • 3. Switch the Ignition off, and remove the key. Within 5 seconds, insert the 2nd known (Learnt) key in to the ignition, and switch to the ON position.
  • 4. Switch the Ignition Off. The door locks will change state, indicating that smartsheild is in its learning mode of operation.
  • 5. Within 5 seconds, insert the ignition key that is to be programmed, in to the ignition switch, and turn to the On position. The door locks will cycle 3 times, indicating that the 3rd key has been learnt. Switch the key to the off position, and remove
  • 6. Repeat the above step for the 4th key to be programmed (If available).
  • 7. Turn the key to the OFF position, and wait at least 5 seconds. The system will exit learn mode, and will allow the car to start and function normally.
    NOTE : The Smartsheild Learn mode will exit if any of the following occurs,
  • 1. Leaving the ignition in the off position for longer than 5 seconds after two keys have been taught.
  • 2. Any key already taught to the system is reinserted into the ignition lock and turned, unless the delete sequence is being followed.
  • 3. Four ignition keys have been taught to the system.
  • 4. Power to the body computer is interrupted.

    Removing Ignition keys from the smartsheild system
    NOTE : Before commencing this procedure you require,
  • Two ignition keys that have already been taught to the system.
    The procedure to erase misplaced keys is as follows,
  • 1. Enter and sit in the driver's seat then close the door.
  • 2. Insert a taught key into the ignition lock
  • 3. Turn the key to the accessory position then turn off, and remove the key.
  • 4. Within 5 seconds insert the second taught key, then turn the ignition lock to the ignition position then off (do not remove this key from the ignition).
  • 5. At this point, an acknowledgement will be received by the door locks changing state. Unlocked to locked or locked to unlock. This indicates teach mode is active.
  • 6. Turn the second key two to ignition again then off.
  • 7. Remove key two, insert key one, and turn to ignition then off.
  • 8. The BEM will perform a two key acknowledgement. This will be followed by a further acknowledgment to indicate the mode has been concluded.
